The Attorney General of New Jersey (NJ AG) recently issued new, comprehensive guidelines on the use of body-worn cameras (BWCs) for law enforcement agencies within the state. Referred to as the Body Worn Camera Directive, this document outlines policies that seek to ensure transparency, promote accountability, and build public trust while considering privacy concerns.

The adoption of BWCs is a nationwide trend, part of an effort to provide an unbiased record of interactions between law enforcement officers and the public. It is a tool that has become crucial in today's era of increased demands for police transparency and improved community relations.

A More Transparent Approach to Law Enforcement

Under the new guidelines clear stipulations are given on when and how the BWCs should be used, significantly improving oversight and accountability. The directive demands that all uniformed police officers must have their BWCs active while performing their official duties.
