In the United Kingdom, the usage of BWCs predominantly revolves around their use by law enforcement officers. However, the legislations surrounding BWCs extend to various sectors. In addition to the police, emergency services, bouncers, and even shopkeepers may also use these devices following the legal framework in operation here.

Data Protection Act 2018

Guided by the principles outlined in the Data Protection Act 2018, the usage of BWCs must align with rules established about any kind of data gathering equipment. The Act's principles revolve around legality, fairness and transparency, data minimisation, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity and confidentiality, accountability, and lawfulness of processing.

Simultaneously, the BWCs' footage retention is equally bound by law. Any footage not required for any legitimate purpose must be deleted after 31 days.

The Surveillance Camera Code of Practice, 2013

The Surveillance Camera Code of Practice, enacted in 2013 under the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012, is another crucial part of the BWC regulation framework. The Code focuses on ensuring that surveillance cameras are used responsibly, protect individuals' rights, and ensure public safety.
