The utilization of body cameras by police forces globally is a development that has gained massive traction in the early 21st century. These practical devices came to the forefront around 2005, with initial testing in the United Kingdom.

The Rialto Police Department in California was one of the first police departments in the United States to experiment with body cameras in 2012. An important research report was subsequently published in 2013 by the Rialto Police Department and Barak Ariel from the University of Cambridge on the effect of body-worn cameras. The study demonstrated significant reductions in both officer use of force and complaints against officers.

The usage of police body cameras in the U.S became more widespread following the tragic incident involving Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager shot by a white officer in Ferguson, Missouri in August 2014. The rising tide of public opinion following this event and other similar incidents resulted in a drastic move towards ubiquitous body camera use.

By the end of 2014, important entities, including the U.S President Barack Obama, provided significant backing to the use of police body cameras. President Obama proposed a $263 million federal spending package, with $75 million dedicated to purchasing 50,000 body cameras for law enforcement agencies nationwide.
