Various police departments have been keen on integrating this technology into their operations, and this article will delve deeper into the adoption of such devices in the police departments across New Jersey.

Waves of Technology in New Jersey: Dashboard Cameras

In the late 90s and early 2000s, dashboard cameras became increasingly vital tools for law enforcement, primarily to document traffic stops. The revolution was also sparked, to a great extent, in New Jersey. With an aim to bolster accountability and transparency, several police departments in the state adopted the idea of equipping patrol cars with dashboard cameras.

Towns like Toms River, Red Bank, and Paramus were among the first to install such devices. These departments justified their move saying that the cams would help provide an objective record of encounters, hence aiding in resolving disputes that could arise regarding the conduct of their officers.

Expenses are a key issue when integrating such technology, but many departments took advantage of grants and other funding options to offset the costs. Today, the majority of police departments across NJ, regardless of size, have dashboard cameras.
