The dawn of the 21st century had an explosion of technology that influenced every field, and law enforcement was no exception thanks to body-worn cameras(BWC). Initially, its integration was slow, but dramatic incidents serving as catalysts triggered the widespread adoption of police body cameras.

Police body cameras, gadgets roughly the size of a deck of cards, pin themselves to officers' uniforms and capture, from the officer's vantage point, the officers' interactions with civilians. Advocates underline that BWC can monitor the police's integrity, provide evidence in legal encounters, and contribute to officer training. Notwithstanding, it was multiple, inherently similar events that thrust this technology into the global spotlight.

The narrative of police body cameras significantly transformed after the summer of 2014's tragic shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The officer involved in the shooting did not have a body camera, and this lack of first-hand footage sparked a nationwide debate about police accountability and transparency. The incident wasn't the first of its kind, but the social and political uproar it generated was instrumental in pressing the need for body cameras in law enforcement.

In the wake of this incident, President Obama proposed a $263M spending package for law enforcement reforms, $75M of which would go towards subsidizing the purchase of 50,000 body cameras for police officers across the nation. Another influential incident involved the fatal shooting of Walter Scott, a 50-year-old South Carolinian, by a North Charleston police officer in April 2015.
