This has led to the introduction and the rapid adoption of body-worn cameras (BWCs) by law enforcement agencies across the globe. The use of this technology, however, isn't without controversy.

BODY CAMERAS: SHEDDING LIGHT OR SHADOW ON POLICE CONDUCT

BWCs are seen by many as a valuable tool to increase transparency, hold police accountable and build trust with the community. BWCs are most useful in providing a contemporaneous record of encounters between officers and members of the public, making them an integral component of a fair justice system. Unedited video footage helps to resolve disputes about misconduct or excessive use of force, thus bringing the truth to light.

From a law enforcement perspective, BWCs have multiple benefits. When police officers are aware they are being recorded, they're likely to follow protocol, potentially leading to fewer instances of excessive force or misconduct. Additionally, the cameras can be useful in recording the actions of those with whom the police interact, potentially helping to verify or nullify complaints against officers.

Equally important is the potential deterrent effect on crime that the cameras can have.
